For those unfamiliar with the story, here’s the short version. The seeds of the Chinese bamboo tree are planted, watered, and fertilized every day for an entire year. At the end of that first year, nothing happens. So, the process continues, watering and fertilizing every day for four full years. Still, no visible growth.
Then, sometime during the fifth year, something remarkable happens. The bamboo finally breaks through the soil… and in just six weeks, it grows up to 90 feet.
So does the tree grow 90 feet in six weeks, or does it grow 90 feet in five years? The truth is simple: it grows 90 feet in five years because if you stop watering at any point, the tree dies.
